Most of the palm for Guatemalan palm leaf hats comes from the Pacific coast on Guatemala's southern side. In the 1950's much of it came from an inland area to the east of Guatemala City. There is still palm cultivated in that area. But the rate of growth depends upon the amount of rainfall and the temperature. The coastal areas receive much more rain, and the palm, consequently grows much faster.
